How to train your dragon (between 2010 and 2019)
The saga of animated films “How to train your dragon”, released between 2010 and 2019 and the work of Dreamworks, is the most familiar film that has been made of vikings along the history. Here the focus is not centered on battles and invasions, but on one of the many mythological beings that these peoples believed in: dragons.
The story – which is an adaptation of Cressida Cowell’s novels – shows how a teenager viking strikes up a friendly relationship with a dragon, Toothless. The conflict lies in the fact that, by tradition, vikings and dragons are enemies and humans must kill these creatures, as they are supposed to be a threat to their livestock and possessions.
The movie “The Vikings”, released in 1958 and directed by Richard Fleischer, not only became a classic, but was also the first production to address these peoples, their customs, adventures and beliefs. Much of the western world and the Hollywood industry learned about this captivating world thanks to this film.
With Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis as its great protagonists -and with the addition of a shocking animated introduction narrated by Orson Welles-, the plot focuses on Einar and Eric, the sons of King Ragnar who must unite to rescue Princess Morgana and who is a prisoner of the king of England.
Many of the common places (most of them wrong) about the vikings and its brutality, violence and sloppiness has its origin in this film and the way it is presented.
